Our History

Bryella Soft Furnishings was established in 1977 by husband and wife team Bryan and Elaine Marsh. From the back of the family home in South Yorkshire Bry-Ela was born.

The early years

Elaine was trained as a seamstress at Cole Brothers in Sheffield where she managed a soft furnishing workroom. In 1977, Elaine decided to go it alone and set up a small curtain workroom in the back of the family home in Penistone, near Sheffield. Elaine has a flare for soft furnishings and can turn her hand to any fabric to create fabulous bespoke window dressings from the simplest of blinds to dramatic swags and tails.

1991 - Growing the business

As demand for Elaine's curtains and soft furnishings grew in the local area, the home-workroom was soon out grown and Elaine needed larger premises and extra pairs of hands to help her fulfil her ever increasing order book. In 1994 Bryella Soft Furnishings opened a small showroom and workroom at the Old Coffee Tavern in Springvale, Penistone. As the business continued to grow so did Bryella's reputation for quality made bespoke soft furnishing products and a professional fitting and installation service.

2001 - A dedicated workroom facility at Bullhouse Mill

In 2001, after winning a large order for a local hotel renovation project, Bryella soon outgrew its workroom in Springvale. As the projects got larger and more dramatic, Bryan and Elaine moved their manufacturing facility to Bullhouse Mill in Millhouse Green. With a new 1500 Sq. ft. workroom Bryella were now set up to take on contract work and larger domestic projects at any level. A larger dedicated workroom allowed Bryella to continually improve the quality of their made to measure products: it was here that they developed a luxury roman blind product, hand sewn and perfectly finished without a single stitch mark on the face cloth. Bryella's team of seamstresses soon grew to 6 to meet the demands of its ever increasing customer base.

2007 - Keeping it in the family

In 2007, Bryan and Elaine's son Gary Marsh joined the family business to introduce a new IT system and manage the book keeping side of the business. Gary was quick to learn the business and the level of quality and services required to meet Bryella's high standards. Using his marketing background Gary developed a new brand for the business Bryella Interiors and developed a new company website to attract customers from further a field. In 2009 Gary became a partner and took over the day-to-day running of the business.

2008 - Casting the World Wide Web

With a new company website, Bryella soon began to attract customers from all over the UK and beyond. Since 2008 Bryella has sent fabrics, wallpapers and beautiful made to measure curtains and blinds all over the UK and beyond. With thanks to the internet, in January 2009 Bryella were approached by Talkback Themes TV producers to help celebrity interior designer Gorden Whinstance transform a Grade II listed manor house in Hertfordshire.

2009 - New Interior design showroom - A one stop shop

In 2009, after undertaking an interior design course at Leeds College of Art and Design, Gary opened a new interior design showroom in the Old Stables at the Bullhouse Mill complex. Bryella grew its portfolio of designer collections and introduced top end designer brands such as Romo, Harlequin, Farrow & Ball, Sanderson and many more. Gary's vision was to open an interior design studio where customers could come and relax and browse a library of interior design products for their home whilst receiving a one to one personal service.

Bryella’s interior design service is born out of 30 years of delivering quality made to measure curtains, blinds and soft furnishing in some of the finest homes. From the early curtain making days Bryella has now grown to offer its customer the full interior design experience with a choice of paints, fabrics, upholstery, flooring, soft furnishing and bespoke furniture all under one roof.

2011 - Shop online

Gary's new vision was to extend the products, brands and services offered in Bryella's showroom to customers in the comfort of their own homes. In December 2011 this vision became a reality with the launch of Bryella's new ecommerce website. Bryella - the made to measure interior specialists
